WORD CLOUD:
This word cloud is a combination of emotions, actions, themes, and other descriptive images that are a result of the pressures of being an adolescent athlete within high school sports culture. These words reflect the context of contemporary high school sports culture as well as the fictional world of Fredrik Backman's Beartown. I chose these words by brainstorming specific words and ideas of Beartown, my own experiences of being an athlete, and concepts found in contemporary literature and culture.
This trophy serves as a metaphor that encompasses many of the emotions and actions within adolescent sports in pursuit of becoming a winner. This trophy represents the idea of “winning at all costs,” a theme heavy within Beartown when the town is split over a lawsuit that prevents the star hockey player from playing in a crucial game. Words like “win,” “belonging,” and “achievement” are juxtaposed within the trophy with a larger amount of words like “depression," “anxiety,” and “pressure” in order to challenge the expectations as well as highlight what some adolescent athletes go through and experience at their expense to achieve victory. This word cloud should highlight potential actions and emotions that have affected athlete identities in pursuits of athletic excellence, hopefully serving as a conversation starter to acknowledge and change the expectations placed on adolescent athletes.
